I’m a bit of a hummus addict. I seriously can’t get enough of the stuff. I put it on everything…sandwiches, salads and just plain old on my plate with some veggies and crackers. Good stuff.
A few weeks ago I felt that I had had my share of hummus for a while. I don’t know what it was, but I just got sick of it. I stopped buying it, stopped making it…I just needed a break. But I found myself missing something in the afternoons when I was getting that snack attack I always get around 4pm. I needed something crunchy, and something to dip that crunchy in. I needed a replacement for hummus.
I had seen the words “edamame dip” around the web but had yet to try it myself. Using the bag of edamame that has been screaming at me from the freezer, some pantry items and some fresh herbs from the garden, I whipped up this recipe from Whole Foods one afternoon and served it to a friend of mine who was coming over for before-dinner glass of wine. A plate of this dip and some dippers, a glass of good vino and some happy kids splashing in the pool…we were set.
I’m happy to announce…edamame dip is my new friend.
This dip has a very fresh flavor…a little bit sweet from the edamame, a little bit earthy from the herbs. Its not super creamy like hummus, but instead more on the smooth-chunky side if you know what I mean. I loved how it tasted and loved it’s pretty green color even more.
Let me know if you try it. Enjoy!
Edamame Dip
Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
- 1 medium onion, sliced thinly
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 3 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
- 1 tablespoon chopped fresh rosemary
- 1 (16-ounce) package frozen shelled edamame
- 1 cup vegetable stock
- Sea salt, to taste
- 1/2 teaspoons pepper
Directions:
- For dip, heat 2 tablespoons olive oil in a sauté pan over medium heat. Add onion and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened and translucent, 8 to 10 minutes. Stir in garlic, parsley and rosemary and cook until fragrant, about 2 minutes. Stir in edamame, followed by stock. Cook until beans are tender and liquid has reduced considerably, 8 to 10 minutes. Let cool slightly.
- Pour edamame mixture into a blender. Take care as the ingredients are hot - keep your hand over the blender lid. Purée ingredients, gradually pouring in remaining half cup of olive oil. When completely puréed, add salt and pepper. Taste and adjust seasoning.
- Pour dip into a serving bowl. Cover and chill until ready to serve.

This looks delicious! Better Homes & Gardens had a similar recipe in their magazine a month or so ago. It uses an avocado as well.
This looks really fresh and a good change from hummus. I’ve been getting tired of the hummus myself and I absolutely love edamame. I always enjoy your fresh takes on healthy eating!
This looks wonderful – love the idea and am glad it’s subbing well for you!
yum yum! I’ve been wanting to try “edammus” (as I’ve heard it called) for a while now! Your version looks great. I just love edamame- so tasty. This would be great for a party too
love the word edammus!!
This is my new found dip love 🙂 I can’t wait to give this try and share it with my sister Emily. She loves hummus so I know that she’ll dig this as well.
made a similar dip before and LOVED it! I don’t think I included the fresh herbs though–must try that next time! 🙂
I’m hooked on hummus but do get tired of it as well so this looks like a delicious and healthy change of pace. I would take chips and dip over sweets any day of the week.
Barbara, from Barbara Bakes, sent me over to check out your beautiful blog. Can’t wait to see more.
I’m not a hummus fan, but like edamame and have been looking for healthy afternoon snack options too. I’ll give this a try.
I am a huge hummus fan and cannot wait to try this variation with edamame. I love your presentation!
Edamame is such a great substitute and so good for you! Love it.
I had something like this while on a mother-daughter vacation to Maui a few years ago! So ingenious! Thanks for bringing back such a fabulous memory on this dreary day!
I’ll have to try for a change because I am eating hummus almost every day. That looks delicious.
i added fresh lemon juice, punched up the garlic, ground coriander, and smoked paprika! instead of blending we just turned it into a side dish. 🙂 bookmarked it with my cookmarked.com account!
That looks divine. I’m a huge hummus fan and my kids call edamama “candy beans” so I’m thinking I already have some willing taste testers. Thanks for sharing.
A healthy dip is always a great snack to have around. i love the sound of the flavors in this one. Thanks for a great recipe
Mary
I love this recipe!!!
It looks so delicious!
🙂
Just threw away a BRICK of edamame out of my freezer. Gonna have to buy another bag and use this one right away, now that I have a recipe for it!
Great use of edamame. I always have a bag in the freezer and always forget to cook with it! This looks great.
We love edemame. Never thought if serving it as a dip sort of like hommus and pita. Great idea to switch some things around and still get the same nutritional value and always best taste!!
My mum and I were just have a conversation about edamame dips yesterday. We’re going to give your recipe a try – it looks really good.
I can’t wait to try this one!
Love the fresh green color… and I’ve got a bag of edamme in the freezer begging to be made into something like this!
Huge fan of Edamame dip. I like to mix in some peas too!
Aggie this looks irresistible and so do your photos! I’ve been meaning to try a dip with my bag in the freezer so this one will be my first. I’m sure it will evolve as others have noted above. You often add what ever you have around. Avocado sounds delish too! I’m getting growlie just thinking about it! Thanx for sharing:)
Aggie, what a nice refreshing change from the normal hummus! I think the color and flavor of Edamame Dip makes it a completely different hummus. I know what you mean — I love hummus, but I get bored of it too, so mixing it up a little is a great idea!
Ooh, looks a little like wasabi. So you like(d) hummus. This must mean you have some good hummus recipes here on your blog. I will search around on it. Thanks!
Oh. My. Gosh. I love hummus. I love edamame. I would’ve never thought of this but man am I gonna give it a try!
I just found your blog from the comment you left on mine, and I love it! Adding your blog to my RSS reader. And, love the dip! 🙂
Aggie, I have been meaning to try an edamame dip. Nice diversion to hummus & perfect for summer parties!
I love edamame dip! Always a winner!
Definitely going to share this recipe with a friend who wants to make his own edamame hummus.
