East Meets West Burger

You may have heard of the “It’s What’s For Dinner Wednesday” project around blog world this past week. It’s a weekly event in September put on by Beef. It’s What’s For Dinner where a lean beef recipe is posted each Wednesday for bloggers (or anyone!) to cook and review. The best part of it is once you review the recipe on their recipe page here, you will be entered into a drawing to win a gift bag filled with The Healthy Beef Cookbook, a set of Crate & Barrel Grilling Tools, Sur La Table Mini-Steak Thermometers, a reusable shopping bag and other items to help you shop for and cook healthy beef meals! Check out their Facebook Page daily for lots of great beef recipe information and to also find out what the weekly recipe is!

This week’s recipe is a fresh new take on your average burger. We loved the slaw topping and sesame-soy mayonnaise that made this burger different. I loved the slaw so much that I turned it into a “salad” to eat alongside my burger for a healthier meal.

My husband ate his the way it should be eaten, but on an Arnold Sandwich Thin instead of a regular hamburger bun. The only changes I made to the recipe was to include some chopped green onion into the beef mixture and to save some time by using already shredded slaw mix. My husband gave it a big thumbs up…it will definitely be back on our dinner table soon.

We enjoyed our burgers with some grilled sweet potato wedges tossed in a little olive oil, cumin, chili powder, smoked paprika, garlic powder, salt and pepper before hitting the grill. They were awesome! This meal was quick to put together and perfect for a weekday night! And the leftover burgers and slaw were great for lunch the next day!

Enjoy!

oh…and just for fun…my pups taking a break…

  1. Aggie it looks yummy! I also love those Arnold Sandwich Thins (and so does Grumpy!).

  2. mmm sweet potato 🙂 We're doing burgers up on the grill tonight (well Josh and his friend Jeremy are…I'll be doing lots of veggies ;)). Love the looks of that slaw.

  3. The beef people probably wouldn't appreciate me saying it, but I don't eat beef and would make this as a turkey burger 🙂 The east meets west part is what appeals to me, no matter what kind of meat! We're hooked on the sandwich thins at my house, too.

Did you pre-cook the sweet potatoes at all, or just cook them by grilling? They look great wtih the nice grill marks!

  4. What wonderful photos. The slaw looks delicious and I love sweet potato fries. I'll wager the entire meal was delicious.

  5. Erin…for the sweet potatoes: I didn't precook them at all, sliced them into wedges, tossed in oil and spices then put them on grill over a medium low heat. I turned them as the cooked and kept the cover closed.

I bet a turkey burger version of this would be great too!! Love those sandwich thins! 🙂

  6. Looks great! Cute puppies. 🙂

  7. this looks like such a fun way to eat a burger, looks delish!

  8. Aggie,
Yum-O! Yours look great and we really enjoyed them here as well. Mike is hooked on those Sandwich Thins also but I haven't had a chance to try them yet.

Love Amber and Dexter in their camera shot! So cute!

  9. I showed my hubby the burger to see if he wanted it this sat during football and he saw the dogs… he has been begging for a dog forever! DANGIT! I'm allergic so I feel bad, but I don't want to sneeze all day.

  10. Aggie,
Well that hamburger looks amazing! I love coleslaw on sandwiches like that. I am also craving your grilled sweet potato wedges! So smart! I was wondering if you were in Arizona enjoying the 90 degree weather with me, but it looks like you are in Florida. This darn weather is not good soup weather, but I get so tired of waiting I wait it anyway. When someone as clever and cool as you stops by my blog I am way flattered. Thank you!

  12. These burgers do sound incredibly tasty and yam fries are a must for a really healthy dish.

  13. Great burger Aggie and great pics too. Arnold sandwich thins are now a staple in our kitchen.

  14. Wow, that looks great! I love the addition of the green onions to the burger. I'm now going to check for the Arnold sandwich thins when I go to the store this weekend. Sweet potato fries are the best!

  15. Your burgers look great and so do the sweet potato fries. Nice combo!

  16. Hadn't thought to use the Sandwich Thins in a burger. Great idea!

  17. Yum, looks delicious!

  19. That looks so fabulous! And the sweet potato wedges made me drool.:)

  20. I am loving this burger idea – the coleslaw sounds amazing.

  21. Can't wait to try it. Question: In the printed recipe for the slaw dressing it calles for 1 teaspoon of oil, then another 1 teaspoon of oil – what's the deal?

  22. Hi Barbara! I noticed that in the recipe too…I considered it a typo and just used the 1 tsp of oil.

  23. Mmm yummy! I want some of those sweet potato wedges!
