Spring Break Reading List
I’ve been in a bit of a reading funk lately (thanks to Downton Abby, got caught up in a marathon viewing obsession for weeks and it literally derailed my before-bed reading). Now that I’ve moved past DA, I’ve been trying to get back into the habit of always having a book with me in the car, during the kids’ activities, and of course by my bed. The problem has been finding the right book to draw me back into my favorite past time.
Earlier this year, I read a book (rec’d by my friend Kristen), Heft by Liz Moore, that turned out to be one of my favorite books that I’ve read in a long time. You know you love a book when you’re not ready to let the characters go after you finish that last page. I could not let these characters go!! I actually missed them. Deep down I hope that the author puts out some sort of sequel based on the same characters…but who knows if that will happen. Heft was written based on a character that was morbidly obese and living in seclusion in his apartment in New York. After being contacted by a person of his past, his world changes a bit and opens up to all sorts of changes for him. The story definitely drew me in and like I mentioned, I just couldn’t let go.
Since Heft I’ve started and left a handful of books unfinished. I really hate to admit that, but it is what it is. My book list has become dry! I’m ready for a fresh start 🙂
Right now I’m halfway through The Next Best Thing by Jennifer Weiner. She’s one of those authors I feel like I can always count on for a good read. This isn’t one of my favorites of hers so far, but to be honest, it’s still early and it’s starting to get good.
Spring Break is right around the corner for us and I picked up two copies of Harry Potter for my son and I to read together over his time off from school. I have never read Harry Potter! Since we got our annual Universal Studios passes over the holidays and visited the “wizarding world” my interest has been piqued, as well as my sons (who’s 8 by the way, this will be his biggest book yet so he’s excited). By the way, if you’ve got a young reader who is interested in reading about “people”, check out the “Who Was…?” book series, my son is gobbling these up!! I discovered them earlier this year at our Scholastic Book Warehouse Sale and I’m so glad I came home with a few. Since then we’ve been putting several on hold each week at our library and it’s been great to see him going through the series. Any time one of my kids sparks some interest in any time of subject or book series I try to take advantage and feed that interest with more books. 🙂
I’d love to know what you are reading lately and add a few new titles to my Good Reads list (are you on Good Reads by the way? I recently discovered the app for it and absolutely love it – makes going to the library in search of a book even more enjoyable!).
PS…Thursday is the last day to enter my Land O’Lakes giveaway, head on over and leave a comment to enter if you haven’t already, it’s a good one!

I read the Harry Potter books and actually enjoyed them. I am reading 11/22/63 which I have been reading for about 3 months! I’m almost finished though…
My guy is reading the “Who Was Neil Armstrong” right now!
Love Jennifer Weiner too, but yeah I agree The Next Best Thing wasn’t my most favorite of hers. Just got done with Defending Jacob…it was really good.
I just received Fifty Shades of Grey from the library after a 8 months wait 🙂 I should start reading it soon.
I have never watched Downton Abby yet, it’s not on Netflix Canada.
Thanks for the list I just placed a hold at the library for Heft. Have a great day!
I’m part way through Cloud Atlas and it’s breathtakingly wonderful. I’m taking it slow because I want it to last. Recent food books I’ve really enjoyed are Tamar Adler’s An Everlasting Meal and Jenni Ferrari-Adler’s Alone in the Kitchen with an Eggplant : Confessions of Cooking for One and Dining Alone
I for sure need to get back into reading mode.
There are so many different mysteries I love to read!! One series, by Nancy Atherton, called Aunt Dimity or A haunted home renovation mystery by Juliet Blackwell, AWESOME, or if you like Greek mythology try Rick Riordans The Percy Jackson series. once you start reading you can’t put the books down!! I am also reading “The Conversations with God” by Neale Donald Walsch. A very insightful, soul searching book to read!! Enjoy reading your book, curled up in your favourite cozy chair, with maybe a hot cup of tea to spend the afternoon or evening for an hour or two doing what you love, reading!!! :o)
I really love mysteries too but have not read any lately! I’m going to note all the ones you mentioned, I’ve heard of Percy Jackson ! Thank you so much for all of your suggestions 🙂
Aggie,
I’ve found since I’m reading more about food during the day it’s cut down on my desire to see words at night, however, I’ve got Lisa Kleypas’ Dream Lake on my nightstand as my next book. I just finished reading Outstanding In The Field and will pick up a new cookbook when I return it to the library. It was a good read–and I picked up a couple of recipe inspirations (English pea pesto anyone?).
The Harry Potter series is one of the few I happily re-read.
I can totally relate to that Kirsten! I started a no online time after dinner rule for myself a couple of years ago, I’m not stringent on it obviously, but I would so rather be reading a good book than fooling around online in the evenings. I love getting cookbooks from the library too – one of my favorite sections 🙂
My son and I are both very excited to start Harry Potter!
Good Kids is very good I heard U Before Me is excellent
Thank you Roberta – will check those out!
I love Goodreads! I use the app on my phone to scan in the books I get at the library and us the I’m Finished feature to record when I finish. I have a goal of reading 100 books this year and Goodreads is a great way to keep track. I also love that I can get recommendations and check out lists that other readers have created. I’ve read 40 books so far this year so you can imagine how helpful recommendations are!
I love that you set a goal. That’s something I thought of doing, but never did, but it’s not too late. Goodreads has become so helpful at the library – I didn’t realize you could scan in books either!!
I love the scanning feature. I also use it at bookstores to quickly make a list of new releases that I may be interested in reading so I can request them at my library.
I have to admit that I have a few that I’ve started and haven’t finished. And another few that I’ve bought but are sitting untouched. I’m going to check into those 2 recommendations and can’t wait to hear how you like Harry Potter!
So you know I NEVER read…. but one of my goals this year is to change that…. SO I just started a neighborhood Book Club — meeting once a month in the evening for food, wine and chatting about the book. We are picking our 1st book now…. SO excited. So thanks for these great posts on the books you read. Good inspiration!!!
