Garden Update: Grow Baby Grow

(From top left clockwise: mint, Mexican tarragon, baby basil, baby grape tomato)

This past week has been a complete blur I tell you. Busy is in the air. Whether I like it or not.

When I start to feelย  a little (a lot) overwhelmed, I tend to initially go backwards instead of forwards – and what I mean by that is initially I complain, I kick and I scream and I pout about what’s making me busy. But eventually an “aha” moment knocks me in the head and I realize it’s time to get ‘er done. (And to be clear, I’m not referring to anything major here, just the everyday kind of busy, the kind that piles up if you start to ignore it, the not so fun kind.)

Sometimes all it takes is a little fluttering around the house picking up things here and there and accomplishing completely random and unrelated tasks (writing them on a sheet of paper with a line crossed through them after the fact feels incredibly therapeutic too by the way).

What does being busy have to do with my garden you may be thinking? A lot. Being busy has meant that I haven’t been really hanging out with my garden a whole lot lately. And I don’t recommend it one bit.

(The tomato section of the garden scattered amongst their pom-pom friends. I lost 4 small plants due to watering neglect this past week. They were victims of “busy”.)

(I did get excited by this “in the moment” action – zucchini sprouting from seed.)

(Mr. Tomatillo plant doing well – apparently so are the little weeds that are already trying to take over.)

(Recently purchased – first time using)

(My Watering Chair – this is where I hide sit when things are a little crazy in the house. Everyone needs one. Go out and get yourself one as soon as possible please.)

It felt good to be outside (although my allergies are a killer this week) and experience garden progress. Now that’s something I highly recommend.

What’s your garden update? Are you getting planning one? Getting started this weekend? Still thinking about it?

  1. So glad you posted this! Starting a garden has been on my “To Do” list for way too long. I a headed on a family trip for two weeks, but you have motivated me to get busy with my garden when I return. Love the sprouting zucchini!

  2. So jealous of your garden so far! I can’t wait til I get the ok to start on mine!

  3. Very cute!! I want to do herbs again this year but haven’t started it yet. I love your garden!

    • grab a few bags of seeds and throw them in dirt, before you know it you’ll have a huge herb garden! It’s addictive ๐Ÿ™‚

  4. I need to get planting-cant wait for tomatoes-everythings looking good!!

  5. Thanks for the tag, it’s looking beautiful at your house! I’m interested to see how those products work for you. We’ve been trying to find some that work well.

    • I’ll let you know for sure, we’ve always been a miracle gro family (my grandfather swears by it!) but I wanted to keep it more chemical free/organic this year. I’m having a huge problem with weeds in the garden, do you have that problem? They take over! Right now I’m not sure which are weeds and which are basil b/c I sprinkled seeds….so will wait and see before I start pulling. But they are everywhere.

Can’t wait to keep up with your progress too! ๐Ÿ™‚ Have a great weekend!

      • Yes, we have the same weed problem. We just bought that same product you bought today, hoping it works well! We’ve always done Miracle Gro too. One of our flower beds has a big tarp and rocks over it to keep the weeds out that the old owners had. We are planning to rip it all up next year, it’s terrible, I can’t plant anything b/c of it, not sure what they were thinking.

  6. Most of my herbs are doing good and my cherry tomato plant is growing. But something is eating my basil leaves and I don’t want to use pesticides. I found a small free worm and got rid of it but I can’t find anything else. Any suggestions on getting rid of whatever is eating the leaves?

    • those little caterpillars are probably eating the leaves, check under them. I had this same problem last year. someone told me to check under the leaves and they were right, they were hanging out. not many either, but a few can do a job on the basil for sure. check the plants around them too, they might be wandering around. Also, I’ve read that marigolds are a natural bug repellant, maybe plant a couple pots around them. I think I’m going to do that too (they are in my garden, but not near my pots).

  7. Awesome!!! I’m starting my first garden this year. Seedlings are getting started on Monday. I’ll need to add “watering chair” to my list of things to get! ๐Ÿ™‚

  8. I love your garden. It’s so nice to have one. Our last house we had a monster sized one that I did everything from tomatoes to corn. I even did pumpkins and watermelon. Our new place has so many mature trees it’s hard to find a spot to do the garden. I may try raised beds. It’s so relaxing to spend time out there. I love that you have a chair to chill out in.

  9. Your garden looks great! I need a small spot in the yard for one. I’ve held off doing it and also using containers. Thanks for inspiring me!

  10. Looks like you have a green thumb! I’ve got a few plants that I’ve put in 5 gallon buckets to see how they do. Currently the herbs are doing great! My 4 tomato plants look great but for some reason they get all leggy as the season continues. I love using fresh herbs in my cooking ๐Ÿ˜‰

    • My thumb is not always green ๐Ÿ™‚ It has its moments. I have way better luck with my containers than with my garden so we will see this year! What do you mean by your tomato plants getting leggy? Do you snip off the early stems (hard to explain, but if you look at where your stem grows out of base stem, if there are two growing from same spot I snip the older/longer one to promote the new growth)? My grandpa taught me that early on and its something I always do. I took a picture and should have included it in this post for anyone that is not familiar. next one…

Good luck with the garden! keep me posted…and yes, fresh herbs are the best ๐Ÿ™‚

  11. We are starting our first little garden this year. I definitely do not have a green thumb, so we are starting small. I cannot wait to see if it produces anything!

    • My thumb was not always green, it gets a little greener ever year ๐Ÿ™‚ Starting small is a very good idea, that’s exactly what I’ve done over the years. What are you planning on growing? Good luck and have fun!

  12. It feels too early to be planting gardens, but I don’t think we’re going to have any more freezes at this point, so why not? Then we can enjoy the “fruits” of our labor even longer. Thanks for the inspiration!

  13. it’s looking great! we’re going to till the garden for the second time this week and get stuff planted – peas, radishes, lettuces, carrots, maybe broccoli?, and herbs for now. the fig bushes are growing, strawberry plants are flowering -i can’t wait!!
