From the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund:
- Ovarian cancer is the leading cause of death from gynecologic cancers in the United States and is the fifth leading cause of cancer death among U.S. women; a woman’s lifetime risk of ovarian cancer is 1 in 67.
- The American Cancer Society estimates that 21,650 women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer in the U.S. in 2008 and about 15,520 women will die from the disease.
- The symptoms of ovarian cancer are often vague and subtle, making it difficult to diagnose. There is no effective screening test for ovarian cancer but there are tests which can detect ovarian cancer when patients are at high risk or have early symptoms.
- In spite of this patients are usually diagnosed in advanced stages and only 45% survive longer than five years. Only 19% of cases are caught before the cancer has spread beyond the ovary to the pelvic region.
- When ovarian cancer is detected and treated early on, the five-year survival rate is greater than 92%.

Oatmeal Pumpkin Bars
Recipe adapted from allrecipes.com
1/2 cup dark brown sugar
3/4 cup whole wheat pastry flour
1/4 cup white all purpose flour (you can use 1 cup white flour instead of the whole wheat flour)
1/4 tsp baking soda
1/8 tsp salt
1 cup oats
1/2 cup butter softened
3/4 cup Pumpkin Butter (recipe follows)
1/4 cup toasted pumpkin seeds
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease one 8 inch square pan, and line with greased foil.
Combine brown sugar, flour, baking soda, salt, and rolled oats. Rub in the butter using your hands or a pastry blender to form a crumbly mixture. Press 2 cups of the mixture into the bottom of the prepared pan. Spread the pumpkin butter to within 1/4 inch of the edge. Sprinkle the remaining crumb mixture and pumpkin seeds over the top, and lightly press it into the pumpkin butter.
Bake for 30 to 35 minutes in preheated oven, or until lightly browned. Allow to cool before cutting into bars.

Aggie, I love pumpkin butter! I have a recipe that’s slightly different than yours. This weekend I was at a harvest festival and they had a vendor there who produces fruit butters – apple, pumpkin and GRAPE. I can’t imagine grape butter (I like my grapes as wine! hehe) but pumpkin butter is definitely a great fall treat.
Hi Maris! I would love to see your pumpkin butter recipe! I came across this one online and liked it b/c it used the applesauce, it was my first time making pumpkin butter so I would love to try another way.
Great entry Aggie!!! I have been wanting something pumpkin.
Great recipe for a great cause. How very nice of you!
I love this cause! I’ve been tested twice and it always makes me wonder since there really isn’t a specific screening for ovarian cancer. I hope that changes in the near future.
I love anything pumpkin flavored and these look like they turned out fantastic.
Yum Aggie! Your bars look scrumptious, and what a great Awareness post!
Looks great! Thanks so much for participating 🙂
These look sooo good. We just made two big batches of pear butter yesterday and I love pumpkin butter as well. I also love pepitas. These bars sound like something I am going to have to make. The fish looks wonderful as well. I am always looking for good fish recipes since my family really likes fish.
Aggie your oatmeal pumpkins bars looks so yummy – they are a wonderful snack for fall and a fantastic entry for an outstanding cause.
What a great reason to make something yummy. Those bars look fantastic!
These look wonderful Aggie. My kids would gobble them up! I love apple butter but have never had pumbkin butter…I think I will be making these soon. Great recipe.
Oh you’re being so good. Wonderful entry, wondeful cause.
They look perfect for on the go breakfast.
Such a great recipe for a wonderful cause. I’m always on the lookout for new pumpkin recipes, and this one sounds delicious.
What a cutie pie, is that your daughter?
These bars look wonderful – a great thing to have for a morning snack (or if I fancy an extra 10 minutes in bed 😉
Thanks-this is important. I’ve got to start thinking O and join in. I’d love those bars, especially with the pepitas on top. Thanks for your kind comment on my blog today. It made me smile.:)
