This post was originally published September 24, 2014. I’ve updated it with new pictures and wanted to share it again since it’s apple season!

When Fall (and football season) hit I pretty much crave two specific (adult) beverages – pumpkin beer and hard apple cider. It’s a happy day when the pumpkin beer display appears at the grocery store. Hard apple cider, I’ve noticed, seems to be available all year round which is a treat because sometimes a cold, refreshing, slightly sweet apple bevvy really hits the spot on a warm evening on the patio.

I don’t cook pork chops very often at home. No reason why really, it just doesn’t seem to be something I remember to include when I am planning our meals. I really should start adding them into regular rotation because I’ve noticed when I do make them, everyone devours them – including the kids (the whole family loves these Parmesan Baked Pork Chops!).

I’ve always loved the flavor of pork chops with apples – adding the hard cider the mix just makes it better! If you are cooking for your family, don’t worry – the alcohol cooks off in the skillet making them kid friendly. (You can always use regular apple juice or apple cider instead.)

How to make Skillet Pork Chops with Apples and Onions

  1. In a small bowl mix together salt, pepper, rosemary and garlic powder. Season both sides of pork chops liberally.
  2. In a large heavy skillet, heat oil over medium heat. Place the pork chops into pan. (If not enough room, cook pork chops in batches). Cook on one side for 4 minutes until chops are golden brown and releases from pan easily. Cook other side for additional 3-4 minutes.
  3. Take pork chops out and place on to a plate. Repeat with remaining pork chops, if needed.
  4. Add sliced onions and apples into skillet. Season with pinch salt and pepper. Pour in part of hard apple cider (about 1/4 cup) to deglaze pan while tossing apples and onions. Add rest of hard apple cider and let simmer for 5 minutes uncovered or until liquid reduces a bit. Add pork chops back into skillet and cover.
  5. Turn off heat and let sit for 1-2 minutes. Using tongs, take out pork chops and place in dish. Pour apple and onion mixture over pork chops and serve.

Since the pork chops are boneless and thin, this Hard Cider Skillet Pork Chops with Apples and Onions recipe cooks up fairly quickly making it a good option for a weeknight dinner. I don’t know about you, but I love skillet meals like this.

We ate these skillet pork chops with apples alongside these Cheddar Dill Roasted Red Potatoes but mashed potatoes or wild rice would be another great side as well.

  1. Love apples and pork together! I’m still on the search for the right pumpkin beer–something that still tastes like pumpkin (but not like I’m drinking a loaf of pumpkin bread!)

  2. Thank you for the nice recipe.

  3. Oh, this looks fabulous, Aggie. Perfect for the season! Thanks for the linky love for the Apricot Chops! They are yummy, too! 🙂

  4. Hard cider is getting very trendy these days, isn’t it? I’m seeing it more and more. Love the idea of using it as an ingredient – especially for pork chops. This recipe has me in the mood for fall food!

  5. This is my kind of dinner! It really sounds amazing!

  6. I prefer the Shipyard Pumpkinhead beer, served in a glass with a cinnamon sugar rim! Yum!

  7. Delish! I love Angry Orchard cider.

  8. I am loving pumpkin beer right now- Ichabad and Magic Hat are two great ones! Loving these pork chops!!

    • I’ve seen Magic Hat but not Ichabad, and have tried neither! I want to try only new ones this year 🙂 Thanks friend!

  9. I adore hard cider. I’m not much of a fan of pumpkin things in general (please don’t throw things at me), but a local brewery has a sweet potato beer that’s quite nice. These are the perfect fall pork chops!

  11. Bulmers Cider from Ireland is THE best! Outside of Ireland it is called Magner’s. Go to magnersusa.com to look up where it is available.

    • Yes! Magners! I think that is the one I ordered at a bar in NY once (a friend with me rec’d) and loved it! I will have to look for it here locally. Thanks for stopping by!

  12. My family would love this, such a great comforting fall meal!

  13. That’s my favorite hard cider you have in your hand, missy. Love it! AND I love this pork chops dish – looks awesome!

  14. Made this last night – DELICIOUS! Even the kiddos ate it. Perfect fall food. I used the Angry Orchard Apple Ginger. Even better today for lunch.

    • Thanks for letting me know Aimee! So glad you enjoyed it! (I have never tried the apple ginger, will pick some up! 🙂 )

  16. This sounds delicious. I’ll have to try it! There are so many great pumpkin beers available, Wolaver’s Pumkin ale and Southern Tier’s Pumking, are 2 of my faves!

  17. Yum! This recipe turned out fantastic! I added cinnamon to the apple sauté and I highly recommend it. I’ve been a big fan of cider lately so it was nice to incorporate that into cooking. Thanks for an awesome recipe!

  18. This looks delicious! I’ve got it on the menu for tomorrow – just wondering if you have suggestions on a side dish to go with this?

  19. Tried it with some differences tonight, it is finishing up in the oven because we don’t have a big enough pan.

Subbed out the rosemary in the rub and used fresh garlic instead, added in bacon bits and pecans (left over from the pie I made yesterday and potato soup from last week) to the sauce. Used in season honey crisp apples, which are huge and delicious so I only needed one. And we had Elderflower AO in the fridge instead of the regular crisp apple, more of a floral scent and taste to it. Also in the recent college graduate train of thought I added in some Fireball whiskey to the reduction to make it Angry balls style.
Yes it is a drink, one shot of Fireball whiskey to a bottle of Angry Orchard, can also be found under the classier name of Fiery Orchard and one of our favorites in college because it was cheap and good. The cinnamon was a great counterpart to the apple to wake you up when you were cold outside at a bonfire.

  20. These were delicious! I have made them 3 times and tonight, I used thinly sliced chicken breast since I didn’t have pork chops on hand. It was equally delicious! Thanks for the great recipe!

    • wow, thanks so much for commenting and letting me know! I’m so happy you have enjoyed this recipe, and I love that you used chicken this time around, I will have to try that!! Have a great day!

  21. Brand-new wife here! Which also means brand new to the kitchen! Found this recipe on Pinterest & it looked like something we would enjoy (onions are a staple!) Made it tonight & oh my goodness! I overlooked the pork because I’m always worried about meat being undercooked, but the flavors were delish! I omitted the rosemary as we aren’t too crazy about it, but it was still amazing! I’ll definitely be making this with chicken in the future. Thank you!

  22. Making this dish for a few friends, it looks yummy!
We love Bold Rock Cider, mostly sold on the East Coast.

  23. I just found this recipe and made these tonight.  It was absolutely wonderful!  DH ate 3 helpings!

  24. Do you think this recipe can be made in the crockpot?

    • Honestly, I haven’t tried it myself. I would think if you start the pork chops in the skillet to brown them, then transfer. Maybe reduce the liquid a bit (that would be the key). I wish I had an answer for you, I should try myself! I have never cooked pork chops in the slow cooker, but pork tenderloin turns out great.

  25. Made this tonight for dinner. Can I just say, O M to the G!!! They were yummilicious!!!  The whole family devoured these! Definitely a winner and will be a favorite for us. Thank you for sharing this recipe.

  26. Made this last night for dinner and it was so good. Peace, love, and hot stuff, Annette

  27. I’m making this as I type. I normally add apple brandy to my pork chops with apples, but this is a nice change. I doubled the garlic (as I always do). It smells amazing! Serving this with spaghetti squash and roasted carrots. Delish!

    • sounds so good with apple brandy!! Great idea to serve with the spaghetti squash and carrots, I have to make this again, it’s been a while. Thanks for the note!!

  28. These look good enough to sacrifice an Angry Orchard for!
