Winter Reading: What’s On My Bookshelf Right Now

well…not really my bookshelf, but more like my bedside table.

Where are my readers out there? This post is for you. A few of my favorite bloggers have posted about what they are reading in the past and I have always loved those posts. (I actually contributed a few book recommendation to Lori’s post back in October and I have to say Jenna’s book lists came in very handy in Target last month on my iPhone as I was shopping for a book to take with me on my NY trip.) I love to hear about what other’s are reading.

So what am I reading right now? I’m reading the book on the top of that pile up there…The Litigators by John Grisham. It’s classic Grisham – one of my all-time favorite authors – all about lawyers, big pharma and a lawsuit. I’m halfway through and loving it.

Tina Fey’s Bossypants is up next in case you are wondering.

Here are a few books that kept me entertained over the holidays:

Still Alice

Not going to lie…this book was sad. But it was good. The story revolved around an independent, successful woman who discovers she has early-onset Alzheimer’s disease. The writing was great, I didn’t want to put it down.

Stories I Only Tell My Friends

I was a huge West Wing fan (as well as Brothers and Sisters) so I could not not read this. It was written well, entertaining and made me want to watch a bunch of movies from the 80s when I was done reading it. And is it just me or does Rob Lowe get more and more handsome the older he gets?

Mockingjay

This was the third book in the Hunger Games series which I started last fall…you’ve probably heard of it and there is an upcoming movie on the first book out this spring. Loved this series, though I have to warn you, it’s…well, it’s odd. It took me a bit to get into the first book, (Hunger Games), but once I did I couldn’t stop reading and had to finish the series out. It’s futuristic, which is not something I am normally into, but it was the characters that I got hooked on.

Have you read any of these books? What are you reading now? Leave a comment and let me know…

  1. Thanks for posting your current, future, and past readings. I have never read any Grisham but this one sounds interesting. I heard about “Still Alice” but never heard from anyone who had read it. These are both going onto my Kindle list!

  2. I’ve read all of these! Looooved Mocking Jay ๐Ÿ™‚

  3. I’ve read Still Alice. I’m reading Blue Nights by Joan Didion. Here is a link to what my book club has read over the past 15 years:

  4. So on my list of things I wish to accomplish this year? READ! I am a HORRIBLE reader (except for blogs of course). ๐Ÿ™‚ So my plan was to read a book a month. I haven’t done so well, but I know I WILL. You inspired me and now I’ve got a great list to choose from. I used to LOVE John Grisham back when I used to read. ๐Ÿ™‚ Right now I’m reading 1,000 Gifts by Ann Voskamp ~ Have you read that? She’s the blogger of Holy Experience. Great book! Love this post and can’t wait to see what you read next. Hugs!

  5. I loved Bossy Pants, Tina Fey is so funny, I was literally laughing out loud. I also loved The Hunger Games series and I am currently reading Tinker, Taylor, Soldier, Spy. I thought the movie looked interesting but it’s a little slow getting started, I’m sure it will pick up. Love these book posts, they are so much fun!

  6. Just read Bossypants for our wine…I mean bookclub. I enjoyed when she talked about her life, but I had a difficult time enjoying the middle when she talked about the SNL skits/co-workers. I have read 2 out of 3 of the Hunger Games, I am starting Mockingjay tonight. The series remind me of the Twilight series. Over the last few months, I have read The Help and Still Missing and would highly recommend them both! I want to check out The 17 Day Diet.

  7. I like Grisham, too, and I’d really like to read Tina Fey’s. We watch 30 Rock reruns every night on Netflix. ๐Ÿ™‚

  8. Still Alice is a great book. Sad, yes, but for some reason it was enjoyable. A good, quick read.

  9. I just finished Devil in the White City..wow..was dry at times but very interesting non-fiction historical story about the Chicago World’s Fair. Definitely worth reading, glad I stayed with it. Thank goodness we don’t live in the late 1800’s! Have read lots of books by Lisa See. She’s very good. ALA announced the youth media awards today for 2012… http://ala.org/news/pr?id=9108 for children and young adults.

  10. So fun to see what others are reading/recommending! I finished One Thousand Gifts a couple months ago, but I can’t remove it from my bedside. I loved it, just like Kim. I recently finished reading the first Hunger Games book with my daughter, and we’ve now started #2. Not a series I thought I would like – I basically just wanted to read it WITH my daughter, as I’d heard certain things about the books. Sometimes I question why I’m reading them. But I can’t quit. I do find them interesting and enjoyable. And, yes, I do agree on the Rob Lowe thing. ๐Ÿ™‚

  11. I haven’t read many of these and I’m an avid reader. Tsk, tsk. I must get on my game! ๐Ÿ™‚

Read Unbroken when you get a chance. Ahhhhmazing.

I also am immensely enjoying re-reading AJ Jacob’s “The Know it All” – a social experiment in which he reads the entire encyclopedia (in a year?… it’s unclear how long it took, but either way, it’s impressive!)…

Thanks for adding to my book list. I’ll be reading some of these soon! ๐Ÿ™‚

  12. This is killing me because I love to read, and usually read quite a bit, but life has just been so hectic lately. I need ot make time to read more!!

  21. I love the Tina Fey book. Well, maybe not so much the beginning, but the last several chapters were great! She is so hilarious!

  22. I just finished BossyPants. My husband was giving me weird looks the whole time I read it because of my random bursts of laughter!

I started Hunger Games last night and like it so far. I’ve heard great things about it ad know the movie is coming out, so I figured I better get with the rest of society!

  23. Left Neglected by the same author as Still Alice is a good read as well.

  24. Thanks for posting your list ๐Ÿ™‚ I read all of the Hunger Games books w/ my middle school son. Really loved them (though a bit disturbing). Just finished reading The Paris Wife. I highly recommend it. And now I’m reading The Millionaire Messenger by Brendon Burchard. Check back with me in a few months and find out how I make my first million!!
