10 Things In My Fridge | A Southern Fairytale

My Texas friend Rachel is here today and I have to say, I really enjoyed getting a peek inside her fridge! I’m loving her fridge trays (filled with avocados and lots of fruit!) and her cereal containers up top. Rachel you have given me some ideas, thank you! Our fridges have a lot in common including an abundance of eggs, fruits and veggies as well as rattling doors filled with condiments.

Rachel is a sweetheart and lives life fully while sharing her food and family with us on her blog A Southern Fairytale. (I’ve never told her this, but I’ve always thought of her as the real life Connie Britton character from Friday Night Lights, maybe it’s just the red hair and the Texas accent ๐Ÿ˜‰ ).ย  You can also get to know her better through Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest. Thanks for being here friend! xo

Hey y’all! Rachel here. I’m popping over today from A Southern Fairytale to share my family’s fridge with y’all for Aggie’s, 10 Things In My Fridge series. I was so excited when Aggie asked me to be a part of this fun series! I love getting glimpses into other’s lives, seeing how we’re similar, and how we’re different.

The kitchen is the heart of our home, that’s where everyone gathers, it’s where many of our memories are made, family legacies are passed from generation to generation. Our fridge is covered with artwork, hand prints, pictures, and notices. The inside of the fridge can look different from day to day, depending upon who is in the house, what’s happening that week, and how many friends and neighbors have been through. When I’m recipe testing, the fridge becomes a catch-all and is often stuffed with containers filled with ingredients, partially finished recipes etc…

While attempting to photograph our fridge for this series, I realized how completely NOT photogenic our fridge is. It looked quite bright and lovely when we bought it, but once anything is placed on the shelves up top, it immediately blocks any light from above, and there’s only light from above. I ended up blowing the dust off my seldom used Speedlite and doing some creative angling, which was highly amusing to my 7 year old son who happened to be home sick from school that day.

I’m not complaining, though! I feel blessed to have a refrigerator, and especially one full of food!

10 Things In My Fridge | A Southern Fairytale

Aggie asked us to spotlight 10 things in our fridge and talk about them, so here goes nothing, y’all!

10 Things In My Fridge | A Southern Fairytale

1. Greek Yogurt: Greek yogurt is one of my new favorite things, I sub plain greek yogurt for sour cream in just about everything, and no one knows the difference. I have a serving of vanilla greek yogurt every morning for breakfast with berries, chia seeds, honey, and either walnuts or homemade granola.

2. Apples: My family’s favorite snack hands down is apples, so I always have apples in the fridge. My 7 yo would eat 4 a day if I’d let him, but that would get a bit expensive! I really wish I had an apple tree! Sliced apples and popcorn are one of our favorite movie snacks!

3. Avocados: Avocados have long been one of my favorite foods, and I’m lucky enough to be partnered with the California Avocado Commission for the 2nd year in a row, so my fridge is stocked with Avocados during Avocado Season. I adore avocados, and can eat them with just a dash of lemon, Grilled and Stuffed with Black Bean Pico de Gallo, made into The Best Damn Guacamole Ever, and in our family and neighborhood favorite Spicy Grilled Shrimp Quesadillas with Smoky Avocado Cream Sauce.

4. Evolution Fresh Ginger Limeade: I’ve never been a bottled juice kind of person, however, I tried this organic ginger limeade while in Utah this past year and I was immediately a fan! My brothers and I used to suck on limes as kids, we’d beg our mom to make us mouth-puckeringly-tart limeade on hot summer days; and this limeade is a grown up version with it’s hint of ginger. I love it, and when I make it over to Whole Foods to pick up a couple of bottles, I make them last. They’re one of the ways I treat myself.

5. Eggs: We always have several cartons of eggs in the fridge. My kids love making scrambled eggs for breakfast, and Nathan and I could easily eat Migas twice a week! I am constantly in need of eggs for baking, egg washes, coating, and even the occasional face mask. If only eggs were easier to peel (I still can’t find a no-fail way to boil and peel) we’d have boiled eggs and deviled eggs that much more frequently!

6. Water Filtration Pitcher: It gets HOT in Texas, and it’s imperative to stay hydrated. If I don’t have a pitcher of water in the fridge, we will rely on bottled water (WASTE!), or not drink as much water as we should. Each member of my family has at least 3 Tervis Tumblers, and our goal is to drink 4 or 5 Tervis’ full of water each day as a minimum. Keeping the water in the fridge, ice cold, and easily accessed helps everyone to get their water – especially since we’re reminded of it every time we open the doors!

7. Condiments: I’m a huge fan of condiments: Soy Sauce, Mustard, Chile Garlic Paste, Worcestershire, Jellies, Jams, Ketchups, Dijon Mustards, Jalapenos, Banana Peppers… I could go on and on and on…. Both doors of my fridge are chock full of condiments, and I use them as is, and incorporate them into marinades, sauces, dressings etc… The doors of my fridge fairly rattle when opened due to all the condiments jiggling against each other.

8. Grapefruit: Not only is grapefruit the State Fruit of Texas, it’s truly one of my absolute favorite snacks/treats/breakfasts. I can devour a grapefruit as is, broiled with cinnamon and honey, and even in guacamole.
9. Butter: I’m a 7th Generation Texan who loves to cook and eat. The end.
10. Cheese and Bacon: Again. Texan. Cook. Mom. Food Lover. Cheese and Bacon make so many things that much better!
YUM!
Thank you so much for having me, Aggie, and thank YOU for taking a peek into our fridge!

  1. Hi Rachel, firstly LOVVVVEE the cereal above the fridge, I am a HUGE cereal lover, and my mother made me use the tubs as of many years ago when she worried bugs would get inside the boxes! I have never seen that brita before, but that is so awesome! I would love to get me one of those ๐Ÿ™‚ And of course, I love the greek yogurt…that helps my running so much with a quick burst of protein ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Hi Tina! Nice to meet you! Those OXO containers are one of my most favorite things I’ve acquired this year! Our cereal lasts sooo much longer! I think I was traumatized as a child, because I was at a friend’s house and poured cereal out and there were bugs in it!!!! {shudders} I am an avid believer in keeping cereal in those containers now!

      Greek Yogurt lovers unite! ๐Ÿ™‚
