Chocolate-Dipped Frozen Bananas

by Aggies Kitchen on June 18, 2009

I have a secret…I have a serious addiction to cooking magazines. I’m drowning in them. They are all over my house, and its become more stressful than enjoyable lately. I remember the days when I would get so excited about finding a new cooking magazine in my mailbox…now, I cringe knowing that I still haven’t gotten through last month’s (or the month before) pile. And then when I actually get to looking through the magazines and start flagging recipes I want to make…that causes another feeling of anxiety…adding it to the pile of torn magazine pages of recipes to try.

Please…please tell me that I’m not alone.

Over the weekend, my sister in law Jamie was visiting and she perused through my mag pile and pulled a few out to take poolside. She came across this simple recipe and when we both looked at it we knew we were going to make it that night. This is one of those recipes that makes you wonder “why didn’t I think of that myself??”

We set up stations…bowls of crushed pretzels, chopped peanuts, shredded coconut and crushed cookies. Jamie chopped the bananas, then we dipped the chunks into the melted chocolate and rolled them into the yummy toppings. Then they were set on a cookie sheet and put in the freezer for a few hours to harden.

I loved these, and have been enjoying a couple (or few) nightly as my TV watching snack.

Chocolate-Dipped Frozen Bananas
Recipe from Bon Appetit magazine

2 cups bittersweet chocolate chips
2 tablespoons canola oil
Assorted toppings for coating bananas (such as crushed chocolate sandwich cookies, toffee bits, chopped Butterfinger candy bars, chopped salted peanuts, or toasted shredded sweetened coconut)
3 ripe bananas, peeled, cut into 1/2-inch-thick slices

Stir chocolate and oil in heavy small saucepan over low heat just until smooth. Let stand 15 minutes to cool.

Place each topping in separate shallow dish. Line baking sheet with foil. Arrange banana slices on foil. Using fingers, dip 1 banana slice in chocolate, coating completely. Shake off excess chocolate. Drop dipped banana in 1 topping. Using clean hand, sprinkle more topping over banana to coat; transfer to foil-lined sheet. Repeat with remaining bananas, chocolate, and toppings. Freeze until firm, about 3 hours, then serve.

You're not alone with marking recipes to make and adding them to a pile that's already a mile long. These dipped bananas look awesome, they make me want to go get some bananas right now and make some for myself!

Aggie, the chocolate dipped bananas are a feast for the eyes as well as the palate. About the magazines…I force myself into periodic withdrawal, so it's feast or famine around here.

We did choco dipped frozen bananas once but it was with whole bananas and the bananas were on a stick. This is an easier way to do it.Thanks!

What a fun treat! So many fun options too. I check out food magazines from the library so I save money and don't become a pack rat..ha! I do subscribe to a few though.

They look like the perfect snack!

I had the same problem as you… and ended up not renewing a few magazines because I just couldn't get to them anymore. I still get 3-4 a month and that's more than I can get through! It's an addiction!

I have the same anxiety too…so many recipes, so little time to prepare them! You are definitely not alone!

Take care!

Aggie, I hate to admit it but we built the Lake Lure cottage addition around my Gourmet magazine collection.Well not entirely, but I made sure I had a lot of closed cabinets in the bookcases. You are not alone. And I would definitely keep you company if you served me those yummy looking bananas. A little bit decadent, a little bit healthy. My new mantra.

I'm chiming in with the others – you are most definitely not alone. I have a stack on my dining room table, a big one, that I just put there last night and I am determined to throw at least half of it away this evening. Determined I tells ya!

I'm a cookbook-aholic! I love cooking magazines, but forbid myself from subscribing! Instead, I park myself in a seat at the bookstore and lovingly strum through each page! :-) This recipe is perfect for summer! I've never had a frozen banana, but have heard they are wonderful. Now I have a reason to try them! :-)

you are so not alone with your cooking mag stress, but it still doesn't mean that we all aren't crazy!

I saw this recipe in BA, it looks unbelievable.

Aggie,
It was not only fun making these but eating them and licking our fingers afterward.

But now that I've browsed through some of your cooking magazines, like Bon Appetit, I want more. Not a good thing but glad to see I'm not alone!

You aren't alone, I'm a big cooking magazine collector. I do feel behind all the time too! What's your favorite cooking mag?

I'm so the same. I have months & months of cooking mags to read. But I love to collect them. Why all the mags that I have I could be cooking for two full life. Love your dessert.

OMG. I tried these at our last Gourmet Group gathering and they were awesome. I'm not a huge bananas-in-dessert fan but this recipe was amazing. I had chocolate dipped strawberries yesterday — w/ a buffet of other dippers including crushed Graham crackers, chopped pecans, and coconut — and I was thinking about this banana recipe. Yum.

The recopies look delicious. I’d like to add a couple of tips that I’ve learned from experience. First, it’s really important to let your bananas ripen until they are covered with *small* brown spots. That ensures that their sugar level is optimal. Next, when you freeze them, don’t place them in a plastic bag. Doing so will cause the moisture that evaporates from them to crystallize on the bananas. This will melt into the chocolate when you dip them and quickly coagulate the chocolate. We makes tons of frozen bananas at Totally Bananas, Inc. If you wish, take a look at our web site: http://www.totally-bananas.net.
