Sunday Morning Waffles…

by Aggies Kitchen on April 5, 2009

Not long ago, a good friend of mine graciously lent me her waffle maker for a “test drive”. I’ve been wanting to buy one of my own, but like most kitchen gadgets, I wasn’t sure if it was something I was going to really use. My kids eat waffles for breakfast several times a week, so I thought, like pancakes, that it might be a good idea to make large batches of homemade waffles and freeze them.

So last Sunday, we tried out our first batch of homemade waffles. I’ll just say that I couldn’t make them fast enough! Everyone loved them…and they just kept asking for more! I was lucky enough to be able to sit down and eat the last two for my own breakfast.

I found a recipe on Recipezaar that I toyed with and made my own. We have made them 2 Sundays in a row and have really enjoyed them both times. I am thinking it is going to become a Sunday tradition…

I guess I’ll be going out to buy my own waffle maker this week…thank you Betsy for the loaner! ;)

Sunday Morning Waffles
Recipe from Aggie’s Kitchen

1 cup whole wheat flour
1 cup all purpose flour
1/4 cup turbinado sugar (or regular sugar)
3 TB baking powder
3/4 teaspoon salt
2 cups lowfat buttermilk (can substitute lowfat milk)
3 eggs
1/3 cup applesauce
2 TB flax meal
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 tsp cinnamon

Combine flour, sugar, baking powder, salt and cinnamon in a bowl. Add buttermilk, eggs, applesauce and flax meal to the dry ingredients and mix until combined. Pour approximately 1/3 cup of the batter per waffle into the waffle maker and cook according to waffle maker directions.

Serve with a small bit of butter, maple syrup and fruit.

Have a great week!

The waffles look wonderful. We love whole wheat waffles on weekends. We also freeze them and heat them up in the toaster. YUM!

Lovely photos! I bought the All CLad waffle maker from Williams Sonoma a few months back. And I make a whole big batch of waffles at a time and freeze them for the kiddos breakfast! No Eggos in my house anymore!

Aggie, your waffles look really great. Freezing them gives a really quick start to weekday breakfasts. That’s an awfully cute picture of the little ones heading toward the water.

I would love to make waffles, but with 5 kids that might all I get done that day. :) I found a giant griddle, but haven’t found a giant waffle maker…

Hi Aggie… I have not had waffles since my dad made them = ( all the lovely crevices which the butter and syrup can sink into…divine.

Sorry I missed a few posts = (

Those look lovely. One of my favorite foods too. And I don’t own a waffle maker for the same reasons you were talking about.
Plus I am afraid that I will become addicted to them and eat them day and night.
I think it’s better for me to get them when I go out for breakfast or brunch :) (kind of like portion control, hehehe)

I have a waffle recipe taught to me by my Icelandic neighbor from when the kids were babies. I always have them in the freezer. For awhile, it’s all the kids would eat for breakfast! I have 2 waffle makers, and I mix the dry ingredients in advance and keep them in tubs, so they’re there when I need them. Isn’t breakfast great?

Those look wicked good. I love waffles and pancakes. I actually have a bunch of frozen homemade pancakes in the freezer right now. I know what I’m having for breakfast. ;)

I recently bought a waffle maker and it changed my life (and my daughter’s). While I make her “normal” waffles, I often make myself ricotta waffles. Yours look delicious!

Your waffles look great! I just got a waffle maker this past Christmas, and I’m so happy with it! I haven’t made them from scratch yet (still relying on the waffle mix), but I’d love to try this recipe! I do love how you can freeze them on a weekend and just pop them in the toaster any day of the week.

I like making waffles instead of pancakes. Waffles need less babysitting so I can do other things while they cook.

What a darling beach shot! Your waffles look great, too. My entire family enjoys waffles and I know they would snarf these up in mere seconds! I bet these frozen treats taste way better than Eggos! YUM!

Freezing homemade waffles is such a great idea, especially when everyone is on the go. I like that you used whole wheat flour. Did it change the texture of the batter very much?

Adorable beach shot of your little ones!

Do u have to use all purpose flour with the whole wheat flour or could u just use 2 cups of whole wheat?

Aggies Kitchen January 17, 2012 at 12:50 pm

Hi Allison! I am afraid it might come out very heavy and dense with all whole wheat, I’ve tried it with other recipes, and I finally started just cutting it with the AP flour. But, maybe whole wheat pastry flour will work better, I believe it’s lighter but still a whole grain. Have you ever tried it?
